Dear FCL Global Community,
I hope everyone has had a good week! My name is , and I’m from FCL Global’s Singapore hub. Some of you may know me as a GIS researcher as part of the [AGR] Agropolitan Territories of Monsoon Asia module; since last November, I have also been part of the Leadership Team as Programme Manager (Research).
Sometimes I get a reminder of our programme’s truly global reach, and the relevance of our research topics to stakeholders around the world. Last September, Pari Sen Biswas and I co-presented ur-scape – a planning support tool developed at FCL – at the ISOCARP World Planning Congress conference. There, I met the Research Manager of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), the urban planning professional organisation in the United Kingdom. I happened to be stopping by London last month for a vacation and thought to visit him at RTPI’s headquarters on Botolph lane. Although originally an informal visit, I was able to get a tour of RTPI’s space and meet the president, Helen Fadipe MBE, FRPTI. Through our spontaneous chat, I realised that we were looking at many of the same trends and issues. We discussed the transformation of planning towards a more participatory and data-driven practice, as well as the potential of generative AI to reshape capacity-building in local governments. While the UK has a unique tradition of urban planning, nevertheless it also shares many challenges with both Singapore and Switzerland, including climate adaptation, decarbonisation, and community resilience.
I always find it fascinating to learn new nuances about my research interests through the perspectives of different people and different cities! It also motivates me to think bigger about the implications of our work to different urban contexts. What we do may not always be generalisable, but time and time again, I am reminded – when it comes to tackling issues in cities, we are never alone!
Wishing you a great weekend,
Joshua
